Kula Lavender Farm

One of the reasons Maui is consistently voted the best island in the world is because of the diverse landscapes and cultures found all over the island.  There are the beautiful beach resort towns of Wailea and Ka’anapali, the surf culture of Maui’s North Shore, the jungle wilderness of Hana, and the farming/cowboy culture of Upcountry Maui.  Upcountry Maui is a term referring to the towns of Pukalani, Makawao, and Kula, which are located high in elevation up Haleakala volcano.  Here is our list of some fun things to see and do while Upcountry.

Surfing Goat Dairy – Now here’s an experience you won’t find at many other tourist destinations around the world. The whole family will enjoy a visit to this goat farm in the town of Kula.  Choose from a selection of tours that let you pet the goats, milk a goat, and see how the goat cheese process works.  Stop by the gift shop and pick up some tasty Maui goat cheese products as unique gifts for friends back home.

Maui Wine – Maui’s only winery is located in the remote town of Ulupalakua. Many visitors choose to combine a trip out to Hana along with a visit to winery because of its location.  The winery harvests many acres of its own vineyards and you can sample these wines, along with pineapple wine at their beautiful retreat high up the slopes of Haleakala volcano.

Downtown Makawao – Take a step back into the days of cowboys and traveling on horseback. If you head up to the cross streets of Makawao Ave. and Baldwin Ave., you will stumble upon some fun shops and art galleries mostly geared toward the upcountry Maui/farming lifestyle. The famous Komodas Bakery is located on the street corner and has been serving up the best doughnuts on the island for decades.

Kula Lavender Farm – Even if you have no interest in lavender, you should make your way to this amazing setting.  Located high in elevation, the views from the Ali’i Lavender Farm are quite breathtaking. The grounds themselves are very tranquil with little gazebos spread among fields of purple lavender shrubs. The aroma in the air combined with the incredible views will put you in a very relaxed state of mind.

Ocean Vodka Distillery – For $10 you can take a guided tour of this organic farm and distillery.  Or you can plan your trip around lunch and purchase a tour + lunch combo package.  Learn how vodka is made, how the farm maintains its certified organic status, and even sample some locally made vodka
