super bowl recipeAs we all prepare for the 2015 Super Bowl in Arizona this February 1st, between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, we at Condominium Rentals Hawaii thought we would provide you with some fantastic appetizer options for whatever Super Bowl party you plan on attending. How many of your fellow party-goers can say they have created an authentic Hawaiian appetizer?

“Maui Style” Short Ribs (or maybe you can call them “12th Man” Ribs)

There was a very famous spot in the beach town of Kihei on Maui (near Ace Hardware in Kihei’s Azeka Mall) that served the island’s best ribs. Locals and tourists would head to the window daily to pick up their main course for their barbecue that night. This extremely popular rib joint has since shut down, but the recipe lives on! Check out the details below:

4 pounds sliced beef short ribs

2 cups Shoyu (if using a premium shoyu like Kikkoman, use 4 parts shoyu to 1 part water)

1 to 2 cups brown sugar (to taste)

1 tbsp grated ginger (or adjust to taste)

½ to 1 cup chopped green onions

Combine all ingredients into large Ziploc bag, seal, and shake. Marinate short ribs no longer than 24 hours. Grill about 4 minutes on each side. Also works great on chicken for that outdoor tailgate before the big game!

Ono-licious Banana Bread (or maybe call it “Brady’s Banana Bread”)

Banana bread is something every Maui tourist driving the road to Hana should plan to pick up. There are a couple very famous family-run road side stands on Maui that serve the tastiest banana bread loaves imaginable. Some recipes even include other local fruits like mango, pineapple, or papaya, but we will keep our recipe pretty standard to assure you can pick up the ingredients at your local market. Those shoppers out in New England may not be able to find a mango when the temperature outside in February is below zero (it’s around 83 degrees on Maui in case you were interested).

2 cups of sugar

1 cup salad oil

4 eggs

2 ½ cups flour

2 tsp. baking soda

½ cup chopped macadamia nuts (optional)

½ tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. sale

2 cups mashed ripe bananas

½ cup chocolate chips

Mix together sugar and salad oil. Add eggs. Sift dry ingredients together and add to egg mixture. Add bananas, chocolate chips and nuts. Mix well. Pour into two 8 ½” x 4 ½” loaf pans. Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. Makes two tasty loaves. If you want, you can add some white frosting to the top of the loaf to make it look like a little football.
