If you are planning a vacation to Maui, you will most likely be on an airplane for at least 4.5 hours before you arrive.  Because Maui is such a long journey, most visitors stay at least four days, with a majority staying at least a week.  There are plenty of great beaches, restaurants, hikes, etc. that you can do on the other days of your vacation, but we have assembled a list of things to complete on day one!

Costco Run – As we just mentioned, most people vacationing on Maui plan to stay for around a week.  Many visitors like to head straight to Costco once they land, as it is located about 3 minutes away from the airport.  You can then load the cart with tropical fruits, chocolate covered macadamia nuts, your favorite cocktail ingredients, cereals, and other snacks to help make your vacation that much more enjoyable!

Check out a Maui Sunset – When is the last time you have sat down and enjoyed the simplicity of watching the sun disappear over the horizon?  There really isn’t a bad spot on Maui to watch the sunset.  If you are near a coastline, head to a sandy beach and bury those toes in the sand and join others for nature’s movie screening.  If you are vacationing in Kihei, Kamaole Beach Park III is a great beach to watch the sunset, as there is a huge grass lawn that many people congregate.

Eat Some Tropical Fruit – Chances are that half the fruit grown in Hawaii wouldn’t stand a chance planting roots where you are visiting from.  So, when in Rome, do as the Romans!  If you pass a roadside fruit stand, farmers market, or local grocery store, be sure to stop in a purchase a few fruits that catch your eye.  Options like mango, pineapple, coconut, lychee, apple bananas, and star fruit are all popular choices worth trying.   Be sure to check out our Maui fruit chart, so you know what you are eating!

Treat Yourself with Shave Ice – You deserve a tasty local treat after your long day of traveling out to Maui. There are plenty of shave ice stands around the island, so you probably won’t have to drive more than 15 minutes before you could have a shave ice in your hand!
